This comprehensive 9-month course provides an advanced version of the standard public school English curriculum. Students will engage in weekly lessons, covering all facets of reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and creative writing. Throughout the course, students will write multiple essays and receive detailed feedback on both their rough and final drafts, ensuring continuous improvement and mastery of the subject matter.
Teacher Bio: Tanushree Samanta is an elementary school teacher at Fairfax Public School District. Before teaching at Poplar Tree Elementary School, she was teaching at a school for children with language-based learning disabilities in Palo Alto, California. She has graduated from San Jose State University with an MS in Mass Communications and an MA in Education with a focus on Critical Research and Equity. She has had extensive experience teaching children of elementary and middle schools both in a public and private school setting. Tanushree takes pride of the strong relationship she has built with the students and their families over the years and her main focus remains a holistic approach in educating children.

Grade 6 English Honors Course Overview
This course is designed to prepare sixth-grade students for advanced language arts studies. It covers four main areas: persuasive speaking, creative writing, research-based expository writing, and literary analysis. Each area offers students a chance to develop and refine their reading, writing, and public speaking abilities through a thoughtfully selected set of texts and writing assignments.
Our Course Goals
The Language Arts course aims to equip students with strong writing and communication skills, preparing them to be effective communicators and confident leaders. Students engage in a variety of assignments that challenge them to interpret, express, and communicate ideas clearly, whether through written work or oral presentations. By practicing these skills, students will work on building their confidence and stamina in language arts necessary to succeed in college, careers, and everyday life.
